Alternatives

dropify.dev as a Cloudflare Waiting Room alternative

Cloudflare Waiting Room is excellent at the job it was built for, and that job is not yours if you sell out. One number in their configuration documentation decides it, and it is not a number they can change for you.

The number

Cloudflare’s own configuration documentation states that total_active_users has a minimum of 200, and that new_users_per_minute must be greater than 200 and less than or equal to total_active_users.

There is no plan that lowers it, no support ticket that unlocks it, and no setting we have missed. A Cloudflare waiting room cannot admit fewer than about 200 people a minute.

What that does to a drop

You have 500 units.

At 200 admissions a minute, everyone who is going to buy has been let in within two and a half minutes. The queue held them for a moment and then opened. Whoever was fastest through the door took the stock, which — since being fast at doors is what scripts are for — means resellers.

At 2,000 units it is ten minutes. The shape does not change; the queue is a brief pause rather than an allocation mechanism.

This is not a flaw in Cloudflare’s product. It is a product built to smooth sustained load across a large site — to stop a busy Black Friday taking your catalogue down — and for that job a 200-per-minute floor is a sensible default. It just means it cannot do allocation, and allocation is the entire problem when stock is scarce.

Where Cloudflare wins, and it wins hard

You may already be paying for it. Waiting Room comes with Business and Enterprise plans. Business is $200/mo billed annually, or $250/mo billed monthly — and if you are already on it, the waiting room is effectively free. Nothing we can say about specifications competes with free.

No new vendor. Your traffic already goes through Cloudflare. There is no integration, no plugin, no additional party in the request path, and no additional company that can have an outage.

It is better than us at its actual job. If your problem is that a busy sale day takes down a big catalogue, use Cloudflare. We are not built for that and would be the wrong purchase.

It scales further than we do. Obviously.

So the decision is a single question

Does your drop fail because the site fell over, or because the wrong people got the stock?

If the site fell over — Cloudflare, and stop reading.

If the wrong people got the stock, you need three things Cloudflare cannot give you at any price: an admission rate you control with no floor, a way to make arriving first worth nothing, and enforcement that survives one admission trying to become five orders.

What we do instead

An admission rate that is a dial. From a trickle to unthrottled, no floor and no ceiling, identical on every plan including €99. It is a column on the pricing page.

A presale draw. Registration opens over a window, nobody holds a position while it is open, and every position is assigned at random the moment the drop starts. Registering first is worth exactly nothing. (An ordinary queue here is first-come-first-served, like everyone’s — the draw is what a presale does.)

Enforcement inside your own stack. The queue runs in our cloud; an MIT-licensed adapter runs in yours and verifies a signed, single-use pass locally with no network call. On WooCommerce that check also runs at the order, so one admission means one order.

No DNS change and no reverse proxy. Against Cloudflare specifically this cuts both ways. If your site is already proxied through Cloudflare, their waiting room costs you no new integration and this is not a differentiator at all. If it is not, their waiting room requires it to be — the room only works on traffic that already runs through their network — and that migration is the real barrier. Ours needs neither: the plugin runs on the hosting you have, and the edge connector, if you want it, is a Worker on a zone you already own.

Using both

These are not mutually exclusive, and for a store already on Cloudflare the strongest configuration uses both: our edge connector is itself a Cloudflare Worker. Cloudflare keeps the site standing; the queue decides who gets the stock. If you run full-page caching at the edge you need that connector anyway — a cache that answers without invoking PHP cannot be pre-empted by a WordPress plugin.

Get started

Three steps to your first fair drop.

No DNS to change, no reverse proxy, and none of your traffic rerouted. The adapter is open source — read it before you install it.

  1. Install the adapter Cloudflare Worker or WooCommerce plugin.
  2. Paste your setup code One string from the console. There is no second thing to configure.
  3. Open the queue Registration, the draw and admission all run from the dashboard.
